Dr. Philip Bonanno

MD, MS

Dr. Philip Bonanno, MD, MS is a double board-certified adult psychiatrist with subspecialty training in consultation-liaison psychiatry. He specializes in the treatment of ADHD, anxiety, trauma-related conditions, and mood symptoms, including difficulties with focus, motivation, energy, and sleep — with particular expertise when medical illness complicates the treatment of these conditions. He is also a co-founder of BAM Psych, a practice founded on close clinical collaboration and a shared commitment to understanding and caring for each patient, in full.

Dr. Bonanno completed his psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai in New York City, where he contributed to clinical research on emerging treatments for depression and PTSD, including ketamine and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. He subsequently completed fellowship training in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Stanford University, where he developed advanced expertise in medically complex and treatment-resistant presentations, including cases that extend beyond existing diagnostic frameworks. Following his fellowship, he found a natural convergence of his interests in the identification and treatment of ADHD and its mimics — a clinical territory whose complexity routinely spans medical illness, comorbid conditions, diagnostic precision, the recognition of trauma, and the influence of lifestyle on how symptoms present and respond — and brought that breadth to his work at the Hallowell Todaro ADHD Center, where he also played a lead role in developing their ketamine-assisted psychotherapy program.

His clinical approach is comprehensive and individualized, integrating psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and careful attention to sleep, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle — striving toward optimal health and wellbeing. His therapeutic framework draws from CBT, DBT, psychodynamic and relational therapy, and trauma-informed care. Central to his practice is a commitment to patient education: he believes that each person should have full ownership over their care, and that his role is to serve as their partner and consultant — ensuring that every person walks away as an expert on their own health.

Dr. Bonanno approaches each patient with deep curiosity about their personal story, taking time to understand the broader biographical context, values, and motivations that shape their experience. Part of this work is co-creating an ideal vision of what each person is capable of — tending to it over time and working toward it tenaciously, together. His goal is to help patients rebuild trust in themselves, reconnect with a sense of direction and meaning, cultivate emotional flexibility, and narrow the gap between how they function on their best days and how they function day to day. He believes that when people feel aligned with who they truly are, they can bring greater clarity, creativity, and vitality to their work, relationships, and inner life.

Dr. Bonanno is currently accepting new patients for psychiatric medication management and second opinion consultations via telehealth in California and Washington.
